WTB: Miata for under 8000$ ideally |
Lead | |
|
Hey all, I'm looking to buy a Miata as a cheap and reliable track car. I'm not too keen on tracking my daily driver since I can't afford to write
off a 30000$ car. I've found a few older (93 or older) Miatas for sale on autotrader and kiiji but I was hoping maybe someone on here could point me
towards something a bit better.

Still looking. I'm primarily interested in a 1994-1995 Miata for the 1.8 L motor. I've found a few with around 200K kms on them but if I can find one
with less, that would be great.

I found a nice 1995 with 70000 KM on it but the owner wants the ridiculous price of 14000$ for it. I offered 8000$ (double the KBB value) but he's firm on
his crazy price.

For that much, there's a 2003 with 53,000km for sale in the WRMC.

I've found a few US cars with around 100000 KM for 6500$. I may look into importing one.

Look on Kijiji, you can find a 1997 at $6000 or even a 2002 under $10000 .... |

I have a 1994 British Racing Green I was thinking of parting with. I bought it off the original owner this past spring with only 84000 km. It is in
pristine condition for a 15 year old car. It has beige leather interior, hardtop, a/c, cruise, cd, headrest speakers, etc. Asking 10000.

I've been checking Kijiji religiously for the past month but nothing has really caught my fancy although there are some nice cars available. I expanded my
search outside of Alberta and BC and am currently talking to a dealership in Quebec regarding a 2000 Miata with I believe 112000 km on it for 8900$.

A Miata from Quebec will likely have rust, given their 100% salt applications in winter (similar to Ontario), so if it's been winter driven, walk away.
There will be a reason that the price is so low (albeit, there are a lot of Miatas in Quebec, so it's more of a buyer's market than Alberta). I would
tread very gingerly on a Quebec car nonetheless though.

It's being sold by a dealership which supposedly already inspected it. I was going to go through the report on Monday and specifically ask about rust as
that was my concern as well.

I would take a US Imported Miata over an eastern car anyday... plus when you search through craiglist you'd even wonder why you are paying so much for a
car in canada vs stateside. And what Richard said, tread gingerly on a Quebec car. :P

There's rust you can see, and future rust (that's there already) that you won't see (inside the box-section of the frame, in the rocker panels just
waiting to bubble through)...I'd never consider an eastern-Canada car, but that's just me.

I was going to go the import way but the prices aren't good enough to make it a good deal when you factor in the various fees and taxes.
If the eastern car wasn't driven in the winter, would there still be anything to worry about? BC cars are also a possibility, there are a few available on autotrader.

Are you going to believe a dealer that says it wasn't? How would they know the history. Private, maybe, but dealer, no trust, especially long distance.
Again, that's my opinion...YMMV.

They apparently have the full history of the car but I'll wait until I actually see the full report. What are your thoughts on a BC car? Road salt
wouldn't be an issue but what about the ocean air?
|
|||
MX5 Miata Guy |

BC cars typically have little to no issues...plus there's a lot of BC that isn't on the coast. But, if you want issue-free, a US car might yet be
better still.
I read your reply a number of posts above re: costs to import, but airfare is airfare (likely cheaper one-way to the US than Quebec, or at worst, a wash either way), and with the dollar at near-par again, plus the importation requirements no longer requiring the changing of the front and rear bumpers, the only conversion issue is the installation of DRLs, the only fee is the 6% importation, and cost is a RIV inspection followed by the OOP inspection for your insurance (which again, is a wash, given where you're looking for a car). So, half-price out of the US versus over-priced to full-price in Canada. I know where I'd be looking.

The deals aren't good enough to make importation worth it on a Miata. I found a few 99-00 cars for about 6500$ US. One was in Boston while the other was in
Louisiana. The eastern US car may have the same issues as an eastern canada car, I'm not sure whether they salt the roads. A ticket to Louisiana isn't
cheap and it would be a multiple day trip, meaning I'd have to factor in food and hotel costs, as well as gas. Shipping the car to the border would
probably cost about the same, 1000$ or so.
There's a 1999 Miata for sale on Kijiji right now for 7900$. It has 123000 KM on it. http://edmonton.kijiji.ca/c-cars-vehicles-cars-1999-Mazda-MX-5-Miata-Loaded-W0QQAdIdZ145271803. |
