Are you specifically looking for 99-00 NBs? If so what are your plans for a track car? Keeping it naturally aspirated or forced induction?
Keep in mind that the 99-00 have the non-tubular exhaust manifold, and the CA-spec are even worse with having two O2 sensors. 5sp vs 6sp gearbox, projector vs reflective headlights.

What I want is a Miata with the 1.8 L motor. I originally wanted a 1994-1997 car but the prices are simply not good enough to warrant buying a car with
substantially higher mileage. The only cars I found either had close to 200000 KMs on them (for 5000$) or were wildly overpriced (14000$ for a 1994/95 with
70000 KM on it). A friend pointed out a 1997 for about 7500$ but for that cost I can get a 99.
My plans are to install a roll bar, get some decent tires and brakes and then do solo1 and maybe solo2 in the car. There are other mods I may do but they're not critical and can wait. I would like to stay NA for a while, I've done the turbo car thing (my current car is a WRX) and would like to try the other side on track to see how it compares for myself. |

The NA body is lighter, and of course keeps the headlights clean when not in use. Searching for a reasonably-priced 1994-97 in the US should be dead-easy.

That's what I had originally thought but the prices aren't good enough, for the same price I might as well buy the newer car with less mileage and the
various perks that came with the NB.

First one is a 1994, in a very rare (1994-95) colour to boot, for only $2,500. Miatas are built like tanks...there's one with over 400,000km on it the Wild Rose Miata Club. How good of a deal are you in need of?

In Spec miata? I currently have no plans to compete in spec Miata and I'm not looking to be seriously competitive for some time, maybe a year or two.
I'd like to focus on improving my skill this year.

Spec miata has it's own class and has strict modification rules. Miata 1.6 and 1.8(94-97) is in ES while the Miata 99+ is CS same class as the 3rd gen Miata, Solstice, Mazdaspeed Miata. You wouldn't want to sell it two years from now because you can't be competitive in the class you are competing in.

Well realistically I won't be racing in Spec Miata or anything like that for some time given the limited amount of formal racing in Calgary.

I'll likely be picking up a 1999 Miata this weekend. It has 123000 km on it and is green with a tan leather interior.

Have you checked craigslist.org in Vancouver and Seattle? Everyday there are the cars you describe in your price range. I have been checking because I want
to build a 1.6 Miata track car and want to start by spending 3K. BTW I sold my last 1999 Miata Sport package for $7200 with 106,000 miles on it
(Saskatchewan).

I should probably update this. I ended up buying the Miata I mentioned earlier. It needs a bit of work but for the most part it's stuff I would want to
address anyways to get the car ready for track use (like the brakes). This did give me more room on the price and I ended up getting the car for 6800$.
